A US-based political commentator has criticized the government in Washington for adopting “colonial” policies towards the African-American population in the country, Press TV reports.

Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of African People’s Socialist Party from Florida, said in an interview with Press TV that the political relationship between the US administration and black people in the country is of a “colonial” nature.

He added that the social system in the US is based on “exploitation and oppression of African people.”

Commenting on the brutal killing of Michael Brown at the hands of police in Ferguson in August, Yeshitela said African people have been frequently subjected to such brutal behavior over the past decades.

“It is a typical treatment that African people in this country have historically experienced at the hands of United States government and its agents, including the police organizations, throughout this country,” Yeshitela said.
The analyst also concluded that the blacks and other people of color in the US are facing economic discrimination as the wealth gap between white people and African-American families continues to widen further.

The fatal shootings of several black people have reopened a fierce national debate in the United States on race and police brutality in dealing with minorities.

Brown’s shooting has triggered massive protests against police brutality in the United States and across several other countries.

A fresh wave of protests has erupted across the US following a grand jury decision not to indict a white police officer involved in the death of Eric Garner, another black man, prompting activists to announce a national march to the capital to decry Washington’s failure to bring justice for African Americans.

On Wednesday night, the New York Police Department arrested dozens of people demonstrating against a Staten Island grand jury decision not to charge New York City Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the choke hold death of Garner on July 17.
