US Congress approval rating hits all-time low

A new survey shows that public approval rating of US Congress has hit a record low of 10 percent, reflecting a growing dissatisfaction with an often deadlocked legislative body.

According to a February 2-5 poll conducted by Gallup organization, approval rating of Congress tumbled to 10 percent, the lowest since the polling company began keeping track in 1974.

The new figure is down from 13 percent in January and a previous low of 11 percent in December.

Gallup said that about 86 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Congress is doing. Four percent of the respondents did not have any idea about the issue.

The poll was conducted two weeks after the House of Representatives and Senate resumed work in Washington.

In the 2010 elections, when Republicans seized control of the House and narrowed the Democratic majority in the Senate, congressional approval stood at 21%.
