US-led PA-Israeli talks aimed at votes

The US-led talks between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel were to serve internal political consumption in the US prior to its upcoming midterm elections, an Iranian lawmaker says.

“When the United States and [other] arrogant Western powers fail to promote the continued existence of the Zionist regime through bullying and military measures, they resort to political arm-twisting and staging concession talks,” said Member of Majlis (parliament) Nasser Sodani on Monday, quoted by IRNA.

“The Palestinian people know that these negotiations will bring nothing to them,” he added.

The lawmaker said the US and Israel intend to push their policies in the region through “compromising elements and those who fear this regime.”

He insisted that Palestinian resistance fighters and “real representatives of the Palestinian people” have never recognized Israel.

“The Palestinian people know well that previous talks with Israel had been harmful to them,” he added.

Sodani said US President Barack Obama and his Democratic Party initiated the “hasty” talks to garner electoral support in the November elections amid sinking popularity of Obama in national polls.

“These negotiations serve an internal purpose for the US and are definitely doomed to fail as in previous talks,” he concluded.

Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington on Thursday to resume direct negotiations 20 months after talks froze in the wake of Israel’s December 2008-January 2009 attack on the Gaza Strip, which claimed the lives of at least 1,400 Palestinians.

Palestinians have expressed extensive opposition to the US-sponsored talks between the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority and Tel Aviv, saying the negotiations would only embolden the Israeli occupation.
