US-led soldier killed in eastern Afghanistan attack

A US-led foreign soldier has been killed in an attack in the troubled eastern Afghanistan as foreign fatalities continue to rise across the war-ravaged country.

“An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an …attack in eastern Afghanistan today,” said the Western military alliance in a statement on Wednesday.

In line with the ISAF policy, the statement did not disclose the soldier’s nationality or provide further details on the whereabouts of the incident.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity.

The Afghan conflict has seen a surge in attacks on foreign troops in recent months. Around three hundred foreign soldiers were killed in the war-torn country last year alone.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
