US-led troops kill elderly Afghan civilian

US-led forces have killed an elderly Afghan civilian in troubled southeastern Afghanistan amid growing discontent over the number of civilian casualties.

Eyewitnesses in the Sharan district of Paktika Province told Press TV that foreign soldiers detained an 80-year-old man near a security outpost and shot him dead.

A NATO statement confirmed the incident but said the elderly man failed to stop after receiving warnings.

This comes one day after a roadside bomb ripped through a NATO convoy in the same area.

The loss of civilian lives at the hand of foreign forces has dramatically heightened anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan, causing thousands of Afghans to protest against US-led military presence in the country.

Since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, a considerable number of civilians have lost their lives in NATO air and ground operations.
