Clashes erupted in Cairo’s Tahrir square between supporters and opponents of Egypt’s ousted president Mohammad Mursi on Monday, killing one demonstrator and wounding dozens, members of the emergency services said.

One person died in hospital after being hit by gunfire during the clashes, Mohammad Sultan, deputy head of the emergency services, announced.

He added that at least another 26 people were injured in the violence, mostly by birdshot.

Demonstrators from both sides clashed, throwing rocks and firing birdshot, according to members of the emergency services.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the clashes.

The violence broke out when a group of pro-Mursi demonstrators marched near Tahrir square, the epicenter of the demonstrations that lead to Murs’s ouster on July 3.
