US once again accuses Iran of nuclear deviation

The US has once again accused Iran of deviating from peaceful goals in its nuclear energy program after Tehran unveils its third generation centrifuges.

“If Iran wants the international community to believe what it says, that it has peaceful intentions with respect to its nuclear program, then Iran has no need for a third generation, or faster centrifuge,” State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said.

Crowley said Iran has ‘nefarious’ intentions in its nuclear program.

He said Iran’s showcasing of its nuclear capabilities could strengthen the push for UN sanctions.

Earlier on Friday, as the nation celebrated its nuclear energy achievements, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Ali Akbar Salehi, announced that the country has made and tested a third generation of domestically-built centrifuges.

President Ahmadinejad, speaking later, said 60,000 centrifuges of the new generation, which are capable of enriching uranium six times faster than the existing ones in the Natanz enrichment plant, are to be installed at the site.

While, Iran insists its nuclear program is aimed at producing electricity to meet the growing demand of the nation, Western countries accuse the Islamic Republic of pursuing the technology to produce atomic bombs.
