A political analyst says the United States must be held accountable for the ongoing crisis in Iraq, where Takfiri militants are carrying out acts of terror and committing atrocities against the people.

In an interview with Press TV, Ibrahim Moussawi said the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri terrorist group, currently operating in Iraq, enjoys the support of hegemonic powers, particularly the US.

“… You are talking about people who are being supported by the world arrogance, the United States of America namely; though they say in the American administration that they are against what’s happening and that they want to support Iraq but they were the reasons behind the catastrophe and the disaster in Iraq,” he said.

He further said that the ongoing conflict in Iraq has nothing to do with Shia and Sunni Muslims, saying that certain regional countries are making efforts to depict the situation as such.

“So, it’s not a kind of confessional rift or a sectarian wedge that is taking place here…when you talk about the Sunni-Shia rift, it is the propaganda of certain [Persian] Gulf countries that are trying to depict and portray the situation as such,” Moussawi said.

The political commentator said that time is ripe for “a real awakening against those terrorists in order to be terminated and in order to put their danger aside.”

Over the past few days, Iraqi armed forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the ISIL terrorists, who have overrun parts of the Arab country since earlier this month and have announced a so-called Islamic caliphate.

The ISIL militancy is not limited to Iraq as the al-Qaeda-inspired group is also operating in neighboring Syria at the same time.

On Saturday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warned against enemy plots to provoke sectarian conflicts among Shia and Sunni Muslims in the region to undermine the wave of Islamic Awakening.

“Today, the enemy is investing in civil wars in the region and pins hope on a Shia-Sunni war to relieve itself of the concern of Islamic Awakening,” the Leader said.
