US policy toward Iran is duplicitous

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has criticized the United States over its ‘failed’ strategy toward Iran.

“It seems that the Americans have an internal problem in regard to their strategy toward Iran. They have failed to adopt a unified and wise strategy on this issue,” Larijani said in Cairo, where he travelled to attend the three-day meeting of the Parliamentary Union of Organization of the Islamic Conference member states (PUOICM), which opened on Monday.

The meeting is being held to discuss proposals to revise the PUOICM charter.

Larijani said US officials have sent a letter to high-ranking officials in Iran, calling for direct talks.

But he added that Washington has taken anti-Iranian measures that run contrary to the spirit of their requests for talks.

Larijani made the comments after the US Pentagon’s highest-ranking military official said on Monday that Washington should be ready to conduct military operations against Iran.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen made the remarks in a memorandum that sets out strategic priorities for the US armed forces during 2010.

Mullen says he prefers diplomacy in dealings with Iran but has warned that force may be used.

The US and its allies have repeatedly threatened to attack Iran over its nuclear program.

Washington and a number of European countries say “they have suspicions” about Iran’s nuclear plans and have accused the country of attempting to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran, which is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, unlike some of its regional neighbors, has categorically dismissed the allegations, saying its nuclear program is only meant to generate electricity for its growing population.
