Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has described recent US threats over the Iranian nuclear energy program as a sort of “posturing” aimed at regaining its lost credibility in the region.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Larijani further stated that following the events triggered by the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the 33-day Israeli war on Lebanon in 2006, “the country (the US) was struck by a political heart attack in the region, which means that they are no longer able to have appropriate management in the Middle East.”

Reacting to recent remarks by US authorities claiming that the release of the illegally frozen Iranian funds (following the Geneva nuclear deal between Iran and the Sextet of world powers) has led to the improvement of the Iranian economy, the top legislator said, “Such remarks are truly shameful.”

He then went on to explain that the frozen assets belong to Iran, but the US blocked them following the revolution and now it has released only a portion of that.

“The Americans have blocked many of Iranian resources since the Islamic Revolution,” Larijani said.

“To respond to such remarks, the national resolve is quite effective in making them (US) realize that under the current circumstances, the Iranian nation backs the establishment and the government in line with the [Geneva] negotiations,” said the top legislator.

Iran and the Sextet of world powers signed an interim nuclear deal in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 24, 2013. The two sides started to implement the agreement on January 20 and aim to continue negotiations for a final comprehensive deal later this month.

Under the Geneva agreement, the Sextet agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe
