US state of Alabama university locked down after after a woman was shot in an apparent domestic violence on campus

A university in the US state of Alabama was briefly locked down on Tuesday, after a woman was shot in an apparent domestic violence on campus, university officials said.

The woman, a contract worker in the maintenance department of Faulkner University, was rushed to a local hospital after she was shot by her husband on the campus, according to Reuters.

She sustained life-threatening injuries in the shooting that happened in a parking lot near the maintenance building, police said.

The husband was arrested shortly afterwards, said Dave Hogan, spokesman for the university.

A warning was issued by university officials advising students to remain off campus. The university was put in lockdown for about an hour.

Campus leaders, however, said that many students and faculty members never received the alert.

An internal probe into the issue is underway.

Faulkner University is a Christian university with more than 3,500 students enrolled in its four campuses across Alabama.
