‘US supporting terrorism in Syria’: O’Leary

downloadThe United States is “supporting terrorism” in Syria despite its claims that it is fighting terrorism in the world, a political commentator tells Press TV.

“America who’s supposed to be fighting terrorism, in Syria is supporting terrorism. At the same time what Israel does is not being addressed at all by America. Israel has all these nukes and they can destroy the world,” Anna O’Leary said in a phone interview on Thursday.

Based on information provided by US and European security officials, Reuters reported this week that US Congress has secretly approved the provision of US arms to militants fighting against the Syrian government.

According to Reuters, US lawmakers voted behind closed doors in order to fund the arms deliveries through the end of the 2014 fiscal year, which ends on September 30.

On Tuesday, Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Meqdad called on the US to stop arming terrorist groups in Syria, saying arms deliveries to terrorists show “the United States is not interested in the success of” the Geneva II talks.

The Geneva II talks, which were aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, are to come to an end on Friday while no progress was reported by either the Syrian opposition or government officials on Thursday.

“You can’t talk peace while pointing the gun and with the gun to the head of the Syrian delegation, it is not possible to come to a peaceful resolution,” said O’Leary.

“The United States has more than doubled its supplies in the month of January alone of deadly weapons to the so-called Free Syrian Army Supreme Military Command. How can you talk peace while holding a gun in your hand?” she added.

“Sixty foreign nationalities are fighting in Syria, crossing borders to fight within Syria and they are being armed by the United States with deadly weapons, technologies, and techniques,” O’Leary pointed out.

During a Senate intelligence hearing on Wednesday, US spy chiefs acknowledged that over 7,000 foreign militants are fighting against the Syrian government as they said they were worried over the threat the American militants in Syria pose to the US after they return to their country.
