The United States government has targeted Iran for many years because Tehran is opposed to Israel’s violations in the Middle East, an American professor says.

“The US has targeted Iran for many many years, over four decades, largely because Iran has opposed Israel’s conquest of the Palestine and because Iran has resisted the US encroachments in the Middle East,” said James Petras, Bartle Professor (Emeritus) of Sociology at Binghamton University, New York.

“Despite the fact that there’s negotiation underway, Washington continues to look for ways to weaken and undermine the Iranian government,” he told Press TV on Sunday.

Petras made the comments when asked about the latest remarks by Congressman Jim Himes over the ISIL terrorist group.

The congressman revealed that certain Washington’s allies, which oppose Iran, are supporting the terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

“There is support going to ISIS (ISIL) from people who are our friends who don’t like Iran, this is not something we want to play in or tolerate,” Himes said.

Himes added that throughout the years, the US administrations have made mistakes with regard to national and international crises because of fear suggesting that the US should do “what only we can do,” noting Washington actions “are making this worse by tolerating our so-called ‘friends’ playing a double game.”

The Democratic lawmaker was referring to Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states that are behind supporting the terror network.

Petras expressed hope that the denunciation by the congressman has some impact on Congress.
