Venezuelans hold demo in support of Chavez
Thousands of Venezuelans have celebrated the anniversary of the February 27, 1989 revolt, in support of President Hugo Chavez.

The people gathered in the capital, Caracas, on Wednesday to commemorate the 1989 revolt, which Chavez considers as the beginning of his socialist revolution.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro told the crowd, “Have no doubt that we will defend the beautiful work of commander Hugo Chavez Frias.”

“Today the people and the armed forces are more united than ever, like a fist of the fatherland.”

Maduro delivered the speech with several military commanders behind him to show support for the Venezuelan president and deny rumors that the military is discontent over the handling of the president’s health.

Meanwhile, Diosdado Cabello, the National Assembly president and a former Venezuelan army captain, who has close relations with the military, denied any dispute between him and Maduro.

“We are brothers of the fatherland, we are sons of Chavez,” Cabello said.

Critics have expressed dissatisfaction with the scarcity of information about Chavez’s condition and the lack of photos of the president.

However, Maria Luisa Sanchez, a participant in the Wednesday event, said, “They want videos, but if you show videos, they’ll come back the next day and ask to see him in person.”

It was the first gathering since Chavez returned to Venezuela on February 18 after spending two months in Cuba for cancer treatment.

The Venezuelan government says Chavez is suffering from a respiratory infection, but he holds meetings with aides, communicating by writing.

The 1989 revolt erupted after the government of President Carlos Andres Perez raised fuel and public transport prices, prompting a crackdown, which according to official data left 276 people dead. However, rights groups say about 1,000 people were killed.
