Video- Arab League chief in Syria for talks with Assad

The much expected visit of Arab League Chief Nabil Al Arabi to Syria lasted only a few hours. Little has transpired of the talks he held earlier Saturday with Syrian President Bachar Al-Assad.

According to the official Syrian news agency SANA, the two sides held talks on the ongoing crisis in Syria and discussed steps for speeding up the reform process.

The news agency quoted the Arab League chief saying that Arab countries were committed to Syria’s security and stability. He is reported to have insisted that the Arab League refused to be a rubber stamp for resolutions that threaten the security and stability the Arab member.

International Media outlets claimed that Al-Arabi carried a 13-point document outlining proposals by the 22-member states to end the six-month crack down on protests in Syria but Syrian officials condemned the move and lashed out at what it calls foreign meddling in Syria’s internal affairs

Al Arabi also briefed President al-Assad on the league’s efforts to support the Palestinians’ call for recognition of a Palestinian state with full UN membership and President al-Assad is said to have voiced his country’s full support for Palestinian statehood.

Officials in Damascus said Syria welcomed Arab league efforts to resolve Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian cause but they warned against any party using the League to destabilize Syria and serve the interests of Foreign powers.
