Video- Iran self sufficient in dam construction

It is Iran’s tallest rock-fill dam with clay core, under construction in Khuzestan Province. Like many other dams in the world, the main purpose of the Upper Gotvand Dam is hydropower generation, control of seasonal floods of Karun River and discharged water of upper dams, distribution of agricultural downstream water, and tourism attraction.

Sepasad Engineering Company, the main contractor, began water diversion operation in 2006, with excavation of diversion tunnels. The same year, it also began the embankment operation of dam’s body.

But dam construction is not limited to Iran. The country is also involved in international projects in places such as Nicaragua, Tajikistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 2010, Iran won a contract to build a dam in Afghanistan and the third contract to build a power plant station in Syria.

Hundreds of contracting companies, consultant firms, corporations and hydroelectric manufacturing units are involved in dam construction projects in Iran. In addition to the need to generate electricity, Iran needs dams to control and manage water shortage and underground streams in dry seasons, especially in places such as Khuzestan Province.
