There is no peaceful end in sight for the residents of al-Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, as foreign backed militants have violated several peaceful initiatives for ending the ongoing violence there.
The initiatives were launched by Syria-based Palestinian factions. However, all efforts have so far been fruitless because various militant groups, among them al-Qaeda linked ones– returned to the camp. We sneaked with utmost caution to reach a frontline where a building under the control of the Nusra Front is visible. Nusra and Ibn-Taymiyya brigades were the first to reject the peaceful resolutions. They repositioned forces in the camp by using a network of tunnels, they’d dug before. The huge amount of destruction makes the camp look as if an atomic bomb landed there. Although thousands have been displaced, nearly 20-thousand others are stills living in Yarmuk and they are in dire need of help. Many of them are children, the sick and the elderly. The humanitarian catastrophe is crystal clear on the faces of people. Developments indicate violence would most likely escalate leaving Yarmuk’s dilemma without a clear or near end.
