Violence returns to Libyan capital

Violence has returned to the Libyan capital Tripoli as rival militias renewed fighting in three neighbourhoods to control the city today.

Eyewitnesses reported that sporadic clashes erupted in the city in the neighbourhoods of Ghoot Al- Shaghal, Hay Al-Akwakh and Abu Salim as indiscriminate rockets continue to be fired against them.

A member of the Municipal Council Crisis Management Committee in Tripoli, Nasser Al-Kreo said yesterday that “the committee has met to discuss providing assistance to the people”, noting to “the aggravated humanitarian situation in the city and the council’s lack of resources”.

In a statement today Al-Kreo said 8,000 families were displaced since the outbreak of the clashes last month.

Since July 13 the Libyan capital Tripoli witnessed bloody clashes between rival militias to gain control of the city leaving dozens dead and hundreds wounded.

In a joint statement earlier today, the United States, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom condemned the escalation of violence in Libya especially in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi.
