Washington resorting to dirty measures in Syria: Analyst

The US government is training terrorist groups in Syria and resorting to other “dirty measures” in the country to destabilize and replace the government of President Bashar al-Assad, an American analyst says.

“What is the United States doing training terrorists to go in and to destabilize a nation such as Syria in order to effect regime change that will be cooperative and beneficial towards Israel and America’s foreign policy objectives in the Middle East,” said Mark Glenn, co-founder of the Crescent and Cross Solidarity Movement.

“This should be a huge red flag for all civilized people around the world,” Glenn said in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

Glenn made the comments in reaction to recent reports that a group of 70 US-trained militants, under the name of Division 30, had defected to the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The Pentagon rushed to deny the reports on Wednesday, saying that such claims are “patently false.”

“What has happened to the world today that a superpower such as the United States is forced now to resort to these types of dirty measures in effecting a certain foreign policy,” Glenn asked.

“Why is the US government being asked whether or not militants they have trained have defected to al-Qaeda? What is the United States doing training anyone to act as an offensive force against an established sovereign nation such as Syria?” he questioned.

“This speaks, unfortunately, to the inherent sickness of what has become of not just the United States, but of the entire Western world and the fact that they have to hide in the corner and hide in the shadows like criminals in order to do their business,” the analyst noted.

The US has been conducting a $500 million militant training program in Syria to allegedly fight the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

However, according to high-ranking US military officials such as Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, the Pentagon program has so far produced only “four or five” militants.

At first, the program was set to “train and equip” some 5,400 militants annually.

The White House is considering a major overhaul of its strategy in Syria, looking for alternatives to prevent the training program from totally collapsing.

Syria’s important lesson for Washington

Glenn further noted that the situation for US and Western policies in Syria have now become “chaotic” because they thought Syria was going to be next victim in the wave of regime changes that swept the region during the so-called Arab Spring.

“It only took a few weeks for Ben Ali to be unseated in Tunisia, it took only a few weeks for Mubarak to be unseated in Egypt, so they expected the very same thing going to happen in Syria, the difference being that in this case we had powerful friends in the region such as Iran, who were helping the sovereign government of Syria,” he added.

“This is a very important history lesson for all people today who are witnessing this that the United States is now being forced to crawl into a corner and to explain away the dirty deeds that she has been responsible for bringing about against the good and the decent people of Syria,” he maintained.
