Iran, official name Islamic Republic of Iran, country in Southwest Asia. It is surrounded by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south, and the Caspian Sea in the north. Turkey has land borders with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Its capital is Tehran. Its official language is Persian. Islam is the official religion of the country.

The Iranian political system operates according to several complex government structures created according to the constitution adopted in 1979. The highest state authority is the Iranian religious leadership (Velayet-i Fakih), which is currently held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large oil and natural gas resources.
