World should support Iran declaration

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the international community to support the nuclear declaration Iran signed with Turkey and Brazil.

“There is a unique chance before us and I believe that we should take this chance,” AFP quoted Erdogan as saying at a press conference in Madrid on Tuesday.

“I urge the international community to support this final declaration, which is going to have a very positive impact on the establishment of world peace in the future,” he stated.

The declaration, which was signed in Tehran on Monday, calls for Iran to exchange 1,200 kilograms (2,640 pounds) of its low-enriched uranium for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.

The exchange would take place in Turkey under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran.

The Turkish prime minister also criticized the “mistrusting” countries that are skeptical about the proposal drafted in Tehran.

“I have to underline one fact, that the ones who are mistrustful of this process are not living in this region but we are living in it. Every day, we have witnessed the death of hundreds, thousands of people in this region. We don’t want nuclear weapons, which are a threat to humanity, in our region. We don’t want such weapons anywhere in the world,” Erdogan said.
