Yabroud Fall Deals Severe Blow to “Al-Qalamoun Statelet” Plan

army_soldiersThe fall of Yabroub city dealt, due to its strategic geographical site, a death blow to “Al-Qalamoun statelet” plan despite the fact that not all Al-Qalamoun battles were won yet, Al-Akhbar newspaper reported.

Syrian armyIn an article released on Monday, the newspaper said the fall of Yabroud city brought, among other factors, an end to “Al-Qalamoun Statelet” project. In fact, the opposition plan required taking control of Al-Qalamoun mountains to establish a statelet for the following reasons: Al-Qalamoun is a link between Damascus and Homs, it’s also the biggest gate to move from Syria into Lebanon and it’s the mountains connected with an endless desert. Such mini-state would have formed a strip extending from Lebanon to Iraq and dividing Syria into two parts. The success of such project would have led the opposition to take control of Syria without a lot of efforts, all according to the paper.

In addition, the opposition’s silence on Yabroud fall, the distrust expressed by Al-Nusra Front spokesman and the fierce criticism made among the abroad opposition lead to say that the opposition dream of taking control over Damascus is getting scattered.

Effects on Lebanon

The question that arose from the fall of Yabroud city was: does this event mean that no more explosions of booby-trapped cars, the early products of the above-mentioned mini-state, would take place in Lebanon?

Syrian armyIn fact, Yabroud battle, dismantling some terrorist groups in Lebanon and security measures taken by Lebanese authorities contributed to weakening the ability of the terrorist groups to execute operations in Lebanon.

However, Al-Nabi Othman explosion confirmed that the danger still present. Terrorists will be obliged to prepare booby-trapped cars in new areas in Lebanon. This will change the nature of the battle between them and the Lebanese authorities, the Al-Akhbar report said.
