Yemeni protesters condemn Saudi airstrikes

People in Yemen’s western province of Amran have taken to the streets to protest against the deadly Saudi aggression against their country.

The angry protesters on Saturday condemned the airstrikes that have been carried out as part of the Saudi offensive and have so far left hundreds of people dead and injured.

In the latest round of the airstrikes on Saturday, a village near the capital, Sana’a, was targeted. Reports say nine civilians were killed in the attack.

The demonstrators in Amran said the Saudi aggression would not stop the people of Yemen from achieving their revolutionary goals.

Saudi Arabia launched the airstrikes against Yemen on March 26 in a bid to restore power to the fugitive president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Hundreds of people have lost their lives since the airstrikes started, with the UN humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos, saying she is “extremely concerned” about the fate of the civilians.

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, has also said that at least 62 children were killed and 30 wounded over the past week in Yemen.

Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Houthi revolutionaries.

The Ansarullah movement later said Hadi had lost his legitimacy as president of Yemen after he escaped the capital to the southern port of Aden in February.

In late March, Hadi fled Aden, where he had sought to set up a rival power base, to Riyadh after Ansarullah revolutionaries advanced on the port city.

On Saturday, a top Saudi adviser said the Saudi army and naval special forces have performed specific military operations in Yemen. There was no word on any ground operations.

The unnamed adviser further noted that the Saudi army special forces have supplied weapons and communications equipment to forces loyal to Hadi in the key southern city of Aden.
