Yemeni regime forces killed 8 , injured 27 in Yemen

At least eight people have been killed and 27 others wounded during clashes between Yemeni regime forces and the opposition in the capital, Sana’a.

The fighting broke out overnight when troops loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh used rockets and heavy machine guns against anti-regime protesters, medical sources told AFP on Monday.

Three of the victims were killed in shelling in the Change Square where protesters demanding the ouster of Saleh have camped out for months.

Other fatalities occurred in the al-Hassaba northern neighborhood.

Earlier on Saturday, Saleh’s forces killed 12 protesters and injured dozens of others, according to medics.

Tens of thousands of people have been holding demonstrations against Saleh’s regime since late January.

People are demanding the immediate resignation of Saleh and his prosecution for ordering the killing of protesters.

Saleh returned to Yemen from Saudi Arabia on September 23 after receiving treatment for wounds he sustained in an attack on the presidential palace in June. He has refused to step down despite his pledges to relinquish power.

A letter from Yemen’s youth movement sent to the United Nations earlier this month said at least 861 people have been killed and 25,000 wounded since mass protests erupted across the country.
