People have taken to the streets in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a to protest against the government and call for the prosecution of the country’s former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched in the capital on Saturday marking the end of Saleh’s dictatorship in the Arab country.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, stepped down in 2012 under a US-backed power transfer deal in return for immunity from prosecution, after a year of mass street demonstrations demanding his ouster.

The demonstrators carried posters and chanted slogans against the government. There were reports that similar protests were held elsewhere in the country.

They also called for the country’s current leaders to prevent the growing violence in the country.

The Yemeni people have been staging demonstrations demanding that the former regime officials stand trial.

Yemen is the Arab world’s poorest country. Forty percent of the people of Yemen are living on two US dollars a day or less and one third are wrestling with chronic hunger.
