Young Afghan stabs US soldier to death in eastern Afghanistan

Local officials in Afghanistan say a young Afghan man has stabbed an American soldier to death in the eastern province of Nangarhar, Press TV reports.

Haji Zalmai Khan, governor of the Ghani Khel District, said the 14-year-old assailant had fled the scene after approaching the solider and stabbing him.

He added that a search operation is underway to arrest the attacker.

Taliban forces have said the boy, identified as Khalid, has taken refuge with them.

Meanwhile, local residents say US forces have rounded up 200 people following the incident.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity.

The Afghan conflict has seen a surge in attacks on foreign troops in recent months. Around three hundred foreign soldiers were killed in the war-torn country last year alone.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
