Zakani urges unity in principlist camp

In less than two months to Iran’s presidential election, principlist hopeful Alireza Zakani says his fellow principlists must unite to field a single candidate should they want to succeed in the polls.

Zakani told reporters that the principlists’ vote could be easily jeopardized if former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani or other key figures from the reformist camp enter the race.

He warned against this serious threat and stressed the importance of confronting it by choosing one single candidate.

The secretary general of the Society of Followers of the Islamic Revolution further outlined his foreign policies, saying he will pursue a more active foreign diplomacy with countries if he is elected president.

The principlist hopeful added that his economic plans pursue the objective of resolving the ongoing problems and will focus on the stabilization of prices, a fair distribution of wealth, and an inclusive social welfare program.

The principlist Front of the Epic-Makers of the Islamic Revolution (FEMIR) has officially voiced support for Zakani’s candidacy.

FEMIR’s spokesman, Mojtaba Shakeri, said on April 19 that the front is comprised of war veterans who fought during Iraq’s imposed war against Iran (1980-1988).

The Islamic Republic’s 11th presidential election will be held on June 14. Presidential hopefuls can register from May 7 to 11.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and candidates must be vetted for qualifications by the Guardian Council.
