According to the AFP report, the religious compound was closed off at approximately 3:00 P.M. (local time) and Israeli police surrounded the area in order to disperse the crowd.

The religious authority that runs the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Waqf, confirmed that the holy site had been closed off to the public, adding that Israeli police fired tear gas towards the Palestinian crowd.
