Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Britain Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf bin Abdulaziz al Saud has criticized the West for its policies vis-à-vis Syria and Iran.

In a commentary in the New York Times on Tuesday, Prince Nawaf, who is a member of Saudi Arabia’s ruling family, said the West’s approaches towards Iran and Syria “risk the stability and security of the Middle East.”

“We believe that many of the West’s policies on both Iran and Syria risk the stability and security of the Middle East,” the Saudi diplomat said.

Nawaf stressed that Saudi Arabia is prepared to act on its own to safeguard security in the region.

“This is a dangerous gamble, about which we cannot remain silent, and will not stand idly by,” he wrote.

The criticism is the latest in a series of public statements by senior Saudi officials expressing displeasure with US and Western diplomatic initiatives toward Syria and Iran.

According to the reports, Riyadh and Tel Aviv are both worried that the West may come to terms with Iran, easing Iran sanctions and allowing Tehran to continue its nuclear program.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — the US, China, Russia, France and Britain — plus Germany sealed an interim deal in Geneva on November 24 to pave the way for the full resolution of the decade-old dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program.

Washington’s decision to retreat from a military strike against Syria has also been another source of concern for Riyadh, which has been a major supplier of weapons and funds to foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government since the outbreak of violence in the country in March 2011.

On November 4, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said Saudi Arabia is responsible for the death and destruction throughout the Islamic world today, including in Syria, calling on Riyadh to stop its policy of sponsoring terrorism in regional states.

Prince Nawaf claimed that diplomatic talks with Iran may “dilute” the West’s will to confront both Damascus and Tehran.
