Iranian Ambassador to India Gholamreza Ansari says Tehran and New Delhi plan to hold a joint economic commission next week.
The Iranian envoy said on Sunday that the joint economic commission would be held in Iran’s capital, Tehran.
Ansari added that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi would head the country’s committee while his Indian counterpart Salman Khorshid would lead the Indian delegation.
“About six memoranda of understanding in various economic sectors are being prepared and we hope they will be signed by both sides during the joint commission,” the Iranian official said.
Ansari added that the two foreign ministers would also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the commission.
He said the issue of the Peace pipeline project, also called Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline, would be discussed at the commission.
In March, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Veerappa Moily voiced his country’s willingness regarding the pipeline project.
On March 12, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari launched the final construction phase of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline on the Iran-Pakistan border.
The pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its growing energy needs at a time when the country is grappling with serious energy shortages.
