It is the country with the largest population in North Africa. Most of the population is settled along the Nile River. Egypt, which has a coast on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, is surrounded by Libya in the west and Sudan in the south. Egypt is neighbor to Palestine and Israel through the Sinai Peninsula, which is located in the Asian continent. The Nile River, which runs through Egypt, empties its waters into the Mediterranean. It is a country located in the Middle East, the cradle of civilization. The country has a territory covering 1,010,000 square kilometers and a population of approximately 90 million with a 2012 estimate.

Egypt has a history of about 7000 years. Since the first civilization, many governments, countries and tribes have come and gone. It became a province of the Ottoman Empire. It gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1922 and was declared a Republic in 1953. With the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 32 years, left and the country started the transition to democracy.
