Protests continue across Kashmir

Thousands of people have poured into the streets in different cities across the Indian-administered Kashmir to protest New Delhi’s rule over the disputed region.

On Sunday, demonstrators defied a strict curfew to hold a pro-independence rally in the capital city of Srinagar.

Police fired teargas and used batons to disperse protesters in several cities in the region.

Thousands also attended a ceremony in memory of dozens of people killed in police firing over two months of unrest.

In Budgam, protesters shouted pro-independence slogans as they traveled on motorcycles.

They were protesting the continuous civilian killings in the volatile valley over the past two months.

The Indian-administered region has been rocked by frequent protest rallies since June 11, when government forces killed a teenager.

The demonstrations come while India has deployed more police and paramilitary troops in Kashmir.

The Indian security forces have also put several key separatist leaders, including Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest to stop further unrest.

On Saturday, Indian troops erected iron gates and barbed wire barriers to seal off flash points of demonstrations in the Muslim-majority region, with police officials saying that “the step has been taken to prevent any law and order problems.”
