5 Killed in Attacks in Iraq

Gunmen in a car shot dead two members of government-backed Sahwa paramilitary group and wounded two others at their checkpoint West of the city of Samarra, some 120 km North of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua on Saturday.

In Northern Iraq, a soldier was killed and three wounded in a roadside bomb near their patrol in al-Mahlabiyah area, some 30 km West of the city of Mosul, which is about 400 km North of Baghdad, a police source said.

A woman was killed and two men wounded in separate attacks by gunmen on two houses in Western and Eastern Mosul, while a body of a man with signs of bullet holes was found in an industrial district in Western the city, the source said.

In addition, six policemen were wounded in two roadside bomb attacks on their patrols South of Mosul, the source added.

Meanwhile, gunmen in a speeding car opened fire on a police checkpoint in the Southern part of the city of Fallujah, some 50 km West of Baghdad, wounding four policemen, a local police source told Xinhua.

Separately, three policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in the town of Tarmiyah, some 40 km North of Baghdad, a local police source said.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, almost 7, 000 Iraqis were killed and over 16,000 others injured from January to October this year.
