NATO missiles in Turkey furthers colonial agenda on Syria

images (18)An analyst says NATO’s missiles are deployed in Syria in an attempt to try to destabilize the country as the military body has always served the “West and Israel’s agenda of colonialism and imperialism .’

The comment comes as NATO says it has made the first set of Patriot missiles operational on the Turkey-Syria border.

The Netherlands was the first of three countries to activate its Patriot missile batteries in the southern Turkish city of Adana on Saturday.

NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander for Europe Admiral James Stavridis has backed the deployment of Patriot missiles, saying it shows the alliance’s willingness to defend allies facing threats.

The NATO missile systems are slated to remain in Turkey for a six-month period, which the military alliance may extend.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Caleb Maupin with the International Action Center in New York to further discuss the issue. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Welcome to the program Sir. Mr. Maupin with NATO Patriot missiles being activated along the Turkish-Syrian border just how close are we to seeing a full-scale war on Syria?

Maupin: Well, this is a continued escalation by the West in their attempt to destabilize Syria and it is against the will of the people of Turkey who have poured into the streets and demonstrated against those missiles being there and it showed; it is proof that the so called Syrian rebels do not represent the aspirations of the Syrian people.

If they did it would not be necessary for all kinds of aid to be pouring in from Turkey and from Saudi Arabia which is really originated in the United States and it wouldn’t’t be necessary for there to be NATO missiles pointed at Syria.

This shows that the Syrian conflict is not about what’s going on in Syria, it’s about the colonial powers, Britain, the United States, Israel trying to impose their will on the people of Syria. This is what this is about and the missiles are proof of that.

Press TV: Indeed, and just how much is Turkey’s hosting of these missiles in its national interests, of course its ambitions to join the EU?

Maupin: Well, I’ll put it this way. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1945 after the people of Eastern Europe were driven out by NAZI invaders and were starting to establish their independence and the former imperialist powers, Britain, the United States, formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to try and keep their grip on Eastern Europe and control it and keep it under their domination and that’s the role NATO served.

There may be other countries that are allowed to join it but it serves the West. It serves Israel. It serves foreign domination and that’s what NATO has always done. It has always intervened; It has intervened numerous times to back autocratic states.

It serves Western bankers and imperialists and now those [NATO’s] missiles are there in Turkey to try and destabilize Syria to further serve their agenda of colonialism and imperialism.
