India discloses details on spy diplomat

One day after India arrested one of its female diplomats on charges of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence service, officials disclose more details about her espionage activities.

Madhuri Gupta, who was the second secretary in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was arrested in New Delhi last week on charges of handing over classified documents to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Sources familiar with her case told the India Today newspaper on Wednesday that Gupta had leaked vital information regarding Washington’s intelligence sharing with New Delhi to the ISI.

She is also suspected of having passed confidential documents about a probe into the deadly terrorist attacks on a Mumbai hotel in November 2008.

Gupta, who spent 24 hours in the interrogation chamber, is now charged with having had good relations with senior Pakistani army officers. Reports also indicate that four more Indian officials were involved in her intelligence network.

The revelation comes at a time when the Indian and Pakistani prime ministers are due to meet on the sidelines of a regional summit in Bhutan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that India has yet to officially inform Islamabad about the arrest.
