US, South Korea begin wargames

The United States has launched a mainly computer-simulated joint military drill with South Korea amid recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

According to AFP, the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement that the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian drill, which started on Monday, involves more than 80,000 South Korean and US troops, who will stay at their normal bases.
North Korea has repeatedly condemned the joint drill as a provocative war rehearsal by Seoul and Washington.
Anti-war activists also held a rally in Seoul to protest against the joint military exercise.
The Korean Peninsula has been locked in a cycle of military rhetoric over the past few months.
The United States and South Korea also held military exercises in April. Washington flew US nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers over the Korean Peninsula during the drills. North Korea, in response, threatened to attack the US mainland with nuclear weapons and to enter a war with the South.
