At least four people have been injured after an explosion rocked a munitions factory near the Turkish capital, Ankara, with Turkish TV saying two of the injured are in critical condition.

The explosion took place on Saturday in a building owned by Roketsan Factory, which produces rockets and missiles, on the Ankara suburb of Elmadag.

Initial reports said the explosion was intended to be a controlled blast to destroy some obsolete munitions.

The Turkish television also noted that a similar incident happened in the factory in June.

The factory, established in 1988, is known for manufacturing unguided rockets as well as laser- and infrared-guided missiles, like Cirit, a laser-guided 70 mm rocket system, and UMTAS, a long-range air-to-surface anti-tank missile.
