Lebanese PM Asks for Iran’s Help to Settle Presidency Crisis

Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for Tehran’s continued support and assistance to the settlement of the crisis in his country over the election of a new president.
“I hope that Tehran will help Beirut in election of Lebanon’s new president,” Salam said on Sunday.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, voiced Iran’s readiness to support any agreement by the Lebanese political groups, specially the Christians, over the election of the country’s new president.

The Lebanese prime minister and Iranian foreign minister met on the sidelines of the 51st Security Meeting in Munich, Germany.

Munich is hosting a high-level security meeting on February 6-8.

A large number of leading decision-makers and prominent senior analysts from different countries are scheduled to participate at the two-day event in Munich to discuss various top political and security issues, notably terrorism, the Ukrainian conflict and the Mideast crisis hotspots.

Some 20 heads of states and governments as well 60 foreign and defense ministers are taking part in the security meeting in the Southern German city, widely regarded as the top annual gathering of political movers and shakers on global strategic issues.

Lebanese presidential election was held in Lebanon on April 23, 2014. No candidate reached a two-thirds majority vote in the first round and subsequent rounds failed to gain a quorum. A nineteenth round is scheduled for February 18, 2015.
