Iran produces new radio-medicines

In line with the peaceful aims of Iran’s nuclear activities, Iranian scientists at the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center have produced two new radio-medicines.

“Following sanctions imposed on Iran on the purchase of certain radio-medicines, scientists of the center moved to conduct their own research and development of the new products,” Mehr news agency quoted the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran as saying.

The organization added that the radio-medicines would go into mass production after obtaining the necessary license from Iran’s Health Ministry with the aim of ‘meeting the needs of the sick’.

Iran currently seeks enriched uranium of 20 percent for producing radio-medicine for medical purposes at Tehran’s research reactor — an enrichment level higher than what is currently produced at Iran’s Natanz enrichment facility.

Tehran says it is willing to purchase the enriched uranium from potential suppliers, including Russia, France and the United States.

Officials from Iran, the United States, Russia, France and the UN nuclear watchdog plan to hold talks in Vienna on October 19 as Tehran weighs its options to supply its research reactor in Tehran with enriched uranium of 20 percent for producing radio-medicine.

At its Natanz enrichment facility, Iran currently enriches uranium to the level of below five percent to provide fuel for its under-construction nuclear power plants.

Ahead of the planned nuclear discussions in Vienna, Tehran has recently expressed optimism that the talks would be fruitful.
