VIDEO: Iraqi Army makes fresh gains in west Mosul

The Iraqi army continued its battle against the self-proclaimed ISIL in Mosul on Sunday as it advances towards north-western districts of the city.

Snipers calculated distances while federal police determined IS positions.

Earlier in the day, two Kurdish fighters were killed after IS members detonated explosives on their persons at the Kurdish K-1 airbase on the outskirts of Kirkuk.

The militant group is said to be deploying similar tactics in Mosul as well as car bombs.

The military operation against IS in the embattled city of Mosul began on October 17 last year.

IS captured the city in 2014, and the offensive is now fronted by the Iraqi military and a coalition of forces, against IS.

Thousands of Mosul residents have been forced to flee the fighting as the campaign continues.
