Iran condemned the assault on its embassy in Damascus, calling for enhanced measures to safeguard diplomatic missions

Iran has issued a strong condemnation of an assault on its embassy in Damascus, orchestrated by foreign-backed militants affiliated with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The attack follows the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Footage shared online on Sunday captured scenes of militant groups removing a poster featuring slain Iranian anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani and Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah from the facade of a diplomatic mission. Additionally, reports indicate that the assailants vandalized the embassy by shattering its windows and ransacked the offices within.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, reiterated on Sunday the fundamental principle of international law mandating the safeguarding of security and safety for diplomatic and consular premises and missions, regardless of the circumstances.

He stated that comprehensive measures have been implemented to guarantee the security and safety of the personnel at the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

An official spokesperson for Iran confirmed that the country’s ambassador to Damascus, along with embassy staff, remain in good health.

Baghaei announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran has engaged in discussions with key stakeholders involved in the Syrian situation, urging them to avert the recurrence of similar assaults.

Militants launched a sudden and coordinated assault on the city of Aleppo and the surrounding rural areas of Idlib in Syria on November 27.

Shortly thereafter, they took control of multiple Syrian cities, such as Hama, Homs, Dara’a, and Suwayda, before making their way into Damascus.
