On October 7, 2023, Israel initiated a significant military operation in Gaza following a historic offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas. This escalation came as a response to what Hamas described as intensified actions by Israel against the Palestinian population.

Israel has consented to a ceasefire in Gaza following an extended 15-month conflict, during which time it was unable to meet its strategic goals in the region. The hostilities have drawn widespread condemnation, with critics labeling the military actions as disproportionate.

The Israeli government did not meet its stated goals of rescuing hostages and dismantling Hamas, even as a significant number of Palestinian casualties were reported.

The agreement reached on January 19 marked a significant development as it embraced the negotiation terms that had long been advocated by Hamas under the established Gaza truce.
