The family of Gaza hospital chief Abu Safiya: He endured ‘severe torture’ during his detention in an Israeli prison

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia's family has alleged that he has endured "severe torture and mistreatment" since his detention by Israeli forces in late December. Dr. Safia is the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza.

According to a statement posted on platform X by Abu Safiya’s family, referencing his lawyer, the detainee experienced severe conditions during the initial phase of his imprisonment in Israeli facilities. He reportedly spent 24 days in solitary confinement before his transfer to Ofer Prison, located in the occupied West Bank, where reports indicate he continues to encounter substandard treatment.

Family members of Abu Safiya report that he is afflicted with chronic hypertension and an enlarged cardiac muscle.

According to statements from his family, Abu Safiya, who is presently undergoing medical treatment, is being provided with only one meal per day. They have described this provision as “inadequate” and highlighted concerns over its substandard quality.

In a statement, the family announced that all allegations against him have been dismissed, citing a lack of evidence. They emphasized that his legal record is unblemished and there are no pending charges.

Abu Safiya’s family has indicated that his release may be forthcoming in the next phases of the prisoner exchange, given that Israeli prosecutors have yet to bring any charges against him.

The family of Abu Safiya has urged the international community to exert pressure on Israel to ensure the provision of sufficient food and medical supplies for him, as well as to facilitate his immediate release.

In a significant development in late December, Israeli military units conducted a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, compelling the evacuation of patients and medical personnel while detaining those who remained on the premises.

Israeli military forces have detained Dr. Abu Safiya, aged 51, for questioning regarding suspected affiliations with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

He has issued an appeal for international involvement to secure both his own release and that of all detained medical staff, emphasizing the necessity of safeguarding healthcare workers, upholding their rights, and ensuring their prompt liberation.
