Israeli airstrikes launched against targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli military aircraft have conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon, focusing on regions situated between Ansar and Zrerieh, marking another instance of infringement on Lebanon's sovereignty.

The assaults extended to areas in proximity to the Litani River, targeting the outskirts of Aishiya, Wadi Zebqin, as well as the region lying between Aita al-Jabal and Beit Yahoun.

In a recent development, airstrikes have been reported despite a ceasefire agreement between the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah and the Israeli government. The ceasefire, which was finalized on November 26, 2024, came into effect the subsequent day.

Following an unsuccessful attempt to reach its objectives, Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Hezbollah. However, reports indicate that Israel has frequently breached the terms of the ceasefire, with incursions into Lebanese territory occurring nearly on a daily basis.

Within a five-day period concluding on December 2, Israeli forces reportedly violated the ceasefire agreement on 52 occasions.

By December 20, a total of 259 violations were documented, leading to 31 fatalities and 39 injuries, according to reports.

In February 2025, Lebanon formally submitted a complaint to the United Nations Security Council, accusing Israel of persistent breaches of a ceasefire agreement and violations of United Nations Resolution 1701. The complaint underscores ongoing tensions and highlights Lebanon’s call for international intervention to address alleged infractions by Israel.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry announced that it has lodged a formal complaint via its permanent mission at the United Nations in New York. This action comes in light of Israel’s alleged breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the declared cessation of hostilities. The ministry expressed its concerns over what it described as Israel’s apparent neglect of established security protocols.

The ministry reported that the complaint meticulously outlined instances of Israeli transgressions in southern Lebanon. These included ground and air attacks, the demolition of homes and residential areas, the abduction of Lebanese nationals, among them military personnel, and assaults on civilians making their way back to border villages.

The Israeli Defense Forces conducted military operations in southern Lebanon shortly after initiating a large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.

The Israeli military operations in Lebanon have mirrored its actions in Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, where over 48,446 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have reportedly lost their lives.

The Lebanese resistance movement responded to the aggression by utilizing all available resources to launch several retaliatory strikes on strategic and sensitive targets within Israel.

In a marked escalation of military operations, Israeli forces intensified their invasion of southern Lebanon during October and November 2024, conducting heavy bombardments that resulted in the widespread destruction of civilian areas. Thousands of homes were demolished, and a considerable segment of the infrastructure in both the southern regions and Beirut sustained significant damage.

Since the escalation began in October 2023, approximately 4,000 Lebanese, predominantly civilians, have lost their lives, and more than one million individuals have been displaced from their homes.
