Gaza Municipality reports an imminent crisis as the city contends with an accumulation of 175,000 tons of waste

Gaza Municipality spokesperson, Asem Al-Nabeh, announced that Israeli authorities are obstructing municipal teams and vehicles from accessing the primary landfill located east of Gaza City for waste disposal.

Asem Al-Nabeh, spokesperson for Gaza Municipality, announced that Israeli restrictions are hindering the ability of local crews and vehicles to transport waste to the main landfill located to the east of Gaza City. This obstruction has led to the accumulation of over 175,000 tons of waste within the city limits.

Al-Nabeh revealed in media statements that municipal teams are currently compelled to gather waste at haphazard and unsanitary dumping locations situated between neighborhoods within the city.

He highlighted an impending environmental and health crisis endangering residents, particularly displaced individuals who are now compelled to reside in proximity to waste dumps, posing a significant threat to their well-being.

A representative from the Gaza Municipality has urgently requested the acquisition of heavy machinery to aid in the removal and transportation of waste from shelters and displacement areas. The municipality reported that, since the onset of the conflict with Israel, 132 of its vehicles have been destroyed and are no longer functional, representing 85% of their fleet.
