UN Envoy Asserts Iran’s Actions in Conflict Are Defensive and Restricted

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Saeid Iravani, has issued a firm denunciation of Israel’s ongoing “aggressive actions” directed at the Islamic Republic. Iravani emphasized that Iran’s countermeasures have been “defensive and limited in scope.”
During a session at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Iravani stated that Iran has never been the instigator of hostilities.
He emphasized that “Iran is not the aggressor,” cautioning that the actions of the Israeli regime, supported by the United States, represent a blatant breach of the UN Charter and international law.
Iravani condemned the Israeli regime’s aggressive actions on Iranian territory, labeling them as a “blatant violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law.”
He criticized the Tel Aviv regime for targeting civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities monitored by the UN nuclear watchdog, warning that continued attacks could result in “catastrophic consequences.”
During a United Nations session, it was asserted that Iran has utilized its intrinsic right to self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter. The response was described as both proportionate and defensive, focusing solely on the origins of the aggression.
He also challenged the notion of “preemptive self-defense” as referenced by certain Israeli officials, describing it as lacking legal foundation and being perilous.
Iravani warned that if this narrative gains acceptance, it could undermine a fundamental principle of the UN Charter, namely the prohibition on the use of force.
Iravani criticized the Western powers, especially the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, for their “double standards” in not curbing Israeli actions, which he claims extend beyond Iran to Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
He remarked that the harsh experiences in these regions demonstrate the UN Security Council’s repeated failure in fulfilling its fundamental responsibilities to maintain international peace and security.
The Iranian ambassador cautioned that, in the absence of firm measures by the United Nations Security Council, Iran remains resolute in its commitment to protecting its sovereignty and citizens.
He stated, “This is not just a right we possess, but a duty we must uphold.”
