‘Israel’ Doing Our Dirty Works: Germany’s Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has characterized Israel's military actions against Iran as a "global service," highlighting concerns over Iran's nuclear program and warning of potential destruction. Merz's comments underscore perceived Western bias amid escalating tensions in the region.

In a candid interview with ZDF this morning, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed unequivocal support for Israel’s ongoing military actions against Iran, describing them as not only justified but also as a service to the international community.

In a statement referencing recent actions by Israel, Merz accused the Iranian government of perpetrating widespread harm and turmoil. He described the regime as a “mullah regime” and implicated it in global “death and destruction,” while also portraying it as a shared adversary. Merz expressed a view that Israel’s actions were tackling a problem that affects everyone.

In his statement, Merz delivered a stern warning, asserting that should Iran persist in defying international demands, its nuclear program would be subject to total dismantlement. He acknowledged that such an endeavor could not be accomplished solely by “Israel,” highlighting the essential role of US participation in any potential action.

In the midst of a series of attacks blamed on Israel, Iran found its actions condemned by the European trio comprising Germany, France, and Britain (E3), which centered their statements on supporting Israel’s right to self-defense. Despite the offensive’s origins in Israel, the E3 notably avoided direct criticism, instead underscoring the importance of de-escalation and the resumption of diplomatic efforts.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged that Berlin received prior notification regarding the attack on Tehran.

Germany, along with France and Britain, has declared its readiness to commence urgent talks with Iran concerning its nuclear program, as stated by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. This initiative seeks to alleviate escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Wadephul, who is presently touring the region, highlighted the intent to aid in the de-escalation of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. He remarked that Tehran had previously bypassed chances to engage in constructive conversation but conveyed optimism that the situation would take a different turn this time.

In an interview with the German public broadcaster ARD on Saturday evening, Wadephul expressed optimism, stating, “I hope that’s still possible.” He emphasized that Germany, alongside France and Britain, stands prepared to engage with Iran, offering immediate negotiations over its nuclear program. Wadephul conveyed his hope for the acceptance of this offer.

Wadephul emphasized that successful negotiations could be pivotal in advancing peace efforts in the wider conflict. He stated, “A key prerequisite for pacifying this conflict is ensuring that Iran poses no threat to the region, the state of Israel, or Europe.”
