Iran, Russia stress non-interference by foreign states in Syria

Iran and Russia have once again stressed the importance of resolving the crisis in Syria through national dialogue and non-interference by foreign states following the recent terrorist attacks in the country.

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Reza Sajjadi reiterated the necessity of implementing a peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov on Saturday,

There have been incidents of violence in Syria despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 12 as a part of Annan’s six-point peace plan.

On Friday, at least 11 people were killed and dozens were injured in a bomb explosion in the central neighborhood of al-Midan in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Later in the day, several Syrian forces were killed and a number of others were injured in an attack by the Syrian rebels near the northwestern port city of Latakia.

Bogdanov, for his part, called for negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition based on Annan’s peace plan.

He also emphasized the importance of supporting Annan’s efforts and the mission of UN observers in Syria.

The first group of the UN observers arrived in Damascus late on April 15. The observers have been approved for the mission according to UNSC Resolution 2042 passed on April 14.

On April 21, the UN Security Council met and unanimously voted on a resolution to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
