A Lebanese lawmaker of the pro-West March 14th alliance, Uqab Saqr admits to cooperating with foreign-backed militants in Syria, a report says.
Saqr claimed on Monday that his activities and cooperation with militants in Syria have been in line with serving the interests of Lebanon, Mehr news agency reported.
The Lebanese lawmaker is accused of deploying militants and weapons to Syria and recordings of Saqr’s telephone conversations with militants in Syria were released recently.
This is while a number of Lebanese Islamic figures issued a statement on Saturday and highlighted Saqr and head of al-Mustaqbal movement Saad Hariri’s role in dispatching arms to militants in Syria.
The religious figures stressed that the move jeopardizes Lebanon’s internal stability and called on Lebanon’s Judiciary to adopt necessary measures and prosecute Saqr and Hariri.
Moreover, the Lebanese lawmaker had reportedly organized the abduction of 13 Lebanese pilgrims earlier in May and finally paid a certain amount of money to the kidnapping group to transfer the pilgrims to Turkey.
Since the beginning of unrest in Syria, Lebanese army has seized a large number of consignments of weapons and ammunitions bound for militants in Syria.
On September 25, Lebanese army intercepted a vehicle laden with military equipment destined for foreign-sponsored militants in Syria.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals.
