US Scud missile remarks aim to create new crisis for Syria

A senior Iranian lawmaker has condemned the US for accusing the Syrian government of using banned Russian-made weapons against the opposition, noting that the claim aims to create new crisis in the Arab country.

“The United States is after creating new crisis against the government in Damascus,” Fathollah Hosseini, member of Iran Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, said on Tuesday.

On Saturday, the US State Department accused the Syrian Army of firing Russian-made Scud missiles into the northern city of Aleppo and killing dozens of civilians there.

“Russia’s all-out support for the popular government of Syria has infuriated the White House officials,” stated Hosseini, who stressed that the Syrian government has never used banned weapons in its battle against the foreign-backed terrorists.

“It is militants, backed by the West and the reactionary Arab states in the region, who massacre innocent Syrians,” the lawmaker noted.

The parliamentarian further blamed the US for attempting to depict a righteous picture of the militants by leveling accusations against the government of Syrian President Basher al-Assad, after the terrorists suffered heavy losses in confrontation with the Syrian Army.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.

Several international human rights organizations have condemned the foreign-sponsored militants for committing war crimes.
